The 1980-81 Virginia Cavaliers entered the season ranked inside the Top 10 thanks in large part to their imposing inside-outside tandem of Ralph Sampson and Jeff Lamp. They won the regular season ACC Championship with a record of 13-1 in league play and entered the NCAA Tournament as the #1 seed in the East region.
To get to the schools first Final Four Virginia had to beat Villanova, Tennessee and BYU. Joining Virginia in Philadelphia for the Final Four were Indiana, North Carolina, and LSU.
