The Syracuse Orange entered the 1986-1987 season ranked #15 in the AP Preseason Poll and rose to #5 after rattling off 14 straight wins to start the season. Jim Boeheim's team was led by sophmore guard Sherman Douglas, junior center Rony Seikaly and freshman phenom Derrick Coleman.
A 23-5 regular season record and trip to the Big East Tournament Championship game was good enough to secure the Orange a #2 seed in the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
After an early scare against Georgia Southern, a route of Western Kentucky, a 6 point win over Florida, and a thriller against #1 seed North Carolina the 'Cuse were headed to New Orleans and the Final Four.
After defeating a Cinderella Providence team for the 3rd time during the season the stage was set for a National Championship showdown with Bob Knight and the #1 seed Indiana Hoosiers. Not even a Keith Smart baseline jumper could ruin the season that was for Syracuse and the promise of what was to become.
