Led by senior guard Joe Crispin, the 2000-2001 Nittany Lions were squarely on the bubble after going 17-10 during the regular season. Penn State needed to make a splash in the Big Ten Tournament to hear their name called on Selection Sunday. After beating Michigan 82-80, they pulled off the upset they needed against #2 Michigan State.
Making it to the Big Ten championship game was enough to get PSU into the tournament as a #7 seed in the South Region. An opening round win against #10 seed Providence setup a showdown with college basketball blue blood and #2 seed North Carolina. Led by Crispin and Titus Ivory, Penn State controlled the 2nd half to win 82-74 and secure their spot in the Sweet 16.
"Carolina had to walk right through us to get to their bus. That was us beating a powerhouse basketball team. You see that on TV growing up. and now you've lived it. You see Jim Nantz and Billy Packer and that stuff, and you are in it." -Ken Krimmel, Penn State Guard
