John Thompson's 1981-1982 came into the season with a #5 ranking after adding Freshman center Patrick Ewing to a team that already had Sleepy Floyd, Eric Smith and Anthony Jones. After losing 2 of the first 3 games the Hoyas reeled off 11 straight wins to get back on track.
Georgetown would go on to finish 2nd in the BIG EAST at 10-4 and win the BIG EAST Tournament which would earn them the #1 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament. #8 seed Wyoming, #4 seed Fresno State and #2 seed Oregon State all fell at the hands of the Hoyas putting Georgetown into the Final Four for the second time in school history.
A 4-point win over #3 Louisville in the Final Four set the stage for a showdown with James Worthy, Michael Jordan and Dean Smith's North Carolina Tarheels. A classic title game ended in heartbreak, after Jordan sank a 15 foot jump shot from the left wing giving UNC the National Championship, 63-62.
"It was kind of game I thought it would be. Hard-fought, close. It was a tough loss but there weren't but two of us left. One had to win, one has to lose."
