The 1991-1992 Duke Blue Devils entered the season as the defending National Champions and looking to be the first team to repeat since UCLA in 1973. Led by Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley, and Grant Hill, Duke went 28-2 during the regular season which included wins against the Fab Five at Michigan and over North Carolina in the ACC Tournament championship game.
The Blue Devils marched into the Elite 8 with wins over Campbell, Iowa and Seton Hall. In what would go down as one of the greatest college basketball games of all time, Duke and fellow blue blood Kentucky battled into overtime. With UK leading 103-102 and only 2 seconds remaining it was the All-American Laettner that would rise to the occasion.
After catching the full court pass from Grant Hill, Laettner dribbled once, turned and fired a jump shot from the free throw line over two Kentucky defenders. The shot hitting nothing but the bottom of the net and Duke was on its way to Minneapolis and the Final Four.
A tight win over Indiana setup a rematch with Michigan in the National Championship game. After struggling during the first half, Coach K's Blue Devils pulled away in the 2nd half to repeat as National Champions and cement themselves as one of the greatest college basketball teams of all time.
"This has been the most gratifying year I've ever had as a coach, culminating with this win. It has just been incredible coaching these guys. I feel we deserve it; we've been ranked No. 1 all year. This is the best group I've ever worked with. They really deserve it." -Mike Krzyzewski
