West Virginia Mountaineers 1997-1998 Retro Shorts

Coming into the season the 1997-1998 West Virginia Mountaineers were unranked in the preseason polls. After a 22-7 regular season WVU fans saw their team climb as high as #15 in early February. That was good enough for Gale Catlett's squad to earn a #10 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament.
A 30 point blowout of #7 seed Temple setup a showdown with #2 seed Cincinnati with a Sweet 16 berth on the line. WVU held the lead with under 15 seconds to play when D'Juan Baker hit a 3 to put the Bearcats up 2 with 7 seconds remaining on the clock.
That set the stage for Jarrod West to hit one the biggest shots in the history of West Virginia basketball. West elevated over Rueben Patterson and banked in a 3 giving the WVU a 75-74 win and sending his team to the Sweet 16.
"I hit some game-winning shots before, but nothing of that magnitude. I knew it was the NCAA Tournament and that it was important, but at the time you're just thinking you've got to advance to have another week of a college basketball career. Back then, you just knew it was a good thing that happened. Years later, you really get a grasp on just how big it was."
