Virginia Tech entered the 1984-1985 season ranked #15 in the preseason poll. That was mainly due to the 1-2 punch of senior Perry Young and junior sharp shooter Dell Curry.

The Hokies went 19-7 during the regular season including 10-4 in the Metro Conference. They earned the #9 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament where they lost a tough one to #8 seed Temple, 60-57.
