Widely regarded as "The Perfect Game" Villanova's upset over #1 Georgetown in the 1985 National Championship is still viewed as one of the NCAA Tournament's signature moments. Played at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on April 1st, the Wildcats defeated the Hoyas 66-64.
After finishing the regular season at 19-10, Rollie Massimino's team sat squarely on the bubble and in need of an at large bid in the tournament. Once they were given the #8 seed in the Southeast Region they had to play Dayton in Dayton on their home floor and narrowly escaped with a 51-49 win.
That win setup a showdown with #1 seed Michigan. Led by Gary McClain's 20pts Nova upset the Wolverines 59-55 to reach the Sweet 16. Wins over #5 seed Maryland, and #2 seed North Carolina, Villanova found itself in the Final Four for the 3rd time in program history.
Memphis State and their All American Keith Lee. With the game tied 41-41 with 3:27 left, Villanova went on an 11-4 run to close out the Tigers 52-45. That set the stage for the National Championship showdown.
