Norm Stewart's Missouri team entered the 1988-89 ranked inside the Top 15 in the Preseason AP Poll. During the season they would climb as high as #3 in the country thanks in large part to a stacked roster which included 4 future NBA players.
With Bruce Irvin, Doug Smith, Gary Leonard and Anthony Peeler leading the way, the Tigers finished the regular season 23-7. Three more wins came during the Big 8 Tournament the last of which, a 98-86 win over #2 Oklahoma, gave Missouri the Big 8 Conference Tournament Championship.
That conference tournament championship propelled the Tigers into the NCAA Tournament as the #3 seed in the Midwest Region. Easy wins over Creighton and Texas put Missouri in the Sweet 16 against #2 seed Syracuse. In a rematch of an earlier season game, Syracuse prevailed by the slimmest of margins again, 83-80.
