Louisville Cardinals 1996-1997 Retro Shorts (Away)
Size
Denny Crum's 1996-1997 team entered the season unranked in the AP Poll. However, that didn't last long after the Cardinals won their first 10 games including 3 in overtime which saw them rise all the way to #6 in the polls. A late season 3 game losing streak dropped them out of the top 10 but not out of the NCAA Tournament.
After going 23-8 in the regular season, Louisville entered the NCAA Tournament as the #6 seed in the East Region and a first round matchup with #11 UMass. An 8 point win put the Cardinals one win away from an appearance in the Sweet 16 and a one point thriller against #3 New Mexico did just that.
Led by Alvin Sims' 27 points Louisville dominated #10 Texas putting the Cardinals in the Elite 8 and their eyes on another trip to the Final Four. It was not to be as they ran into a buzzsaw from #1 North Carolina. The 97-74 loss ended a magical run for Crum and his Cardinals.
