The 2000-2001 Hampton Pirates were led all year by forward Tarvis Williams. For the year the senior averaged 22 points and 7 rebounds per game for the MEAC regular season champs. To earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament the Pirates had to win the MEAC Conference Tournament which they had no trouble doing, winning all 3 tournament games by double digits.
Hampton entered the NCAA Tournament as the #15 seed in the West Region. Their first round opponent was #2 seed and 10th ranked Iowa State led by Jamal Tinsley. In the upset of the tournament, Hampton held on for a 58-57 win before losing to #10 seed Georgetown in the round of 32.
