It didn't take long for the 1995-1996 to shoot from #21 in the preseason poll to #3 after they started the season on a 12 game winning streak. Bob Huggins Bearcats won both the CUSA regular season and tournament championship which earned them the #2 seed in the Southeast Region of the NCAA Tournament.

Led by sophomore forward Danny Fortson, Cincinnati beat UNC Greensboro and Temple to reach the Sweet 16. A win over #3 seed Georgia Tech put the Bearcats one win away from a trip to the Final Four. It wasn't meant to be as UC fell to Mississippi State, 73-63.

For his part Danny Fortson was named Conference USA's Player of the Year after averaging 20 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game. He would go on to be one of the greatest players in the history of Cincinnati basketball.

"Danny wasn't much of a jumper but he had the heart and an incredible desire to be great. The things Danny did to prepare himself were better than anyone I ever had. He ended up a great college player and a great pro because he put the time in." -Bob Huggins, Head Coach
