Coach Sonny Smith's Auburn Tigers entered the 1982-83 season unranked but also boasted on of college basketball's best players in Charles Barkley. Auburn and "The Round Mound of Rebound" got off to a hot 10-4 start that saw the Tigers get ranked as high as #20 in the AP Poll after beating #6 Kentucky, 75-67.
Unfortunately, AU would falter late in the year to finish the season 15-13 and miss the NCAA Tournament. While the '83 season didn't turn out the way they wanted, it was a springboard for Barkley and the Tigers. The next season Auburn won 20 games and was awarded a #5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
During Barkley's time at Auburn he was named All-SEC 3 times, the SEC Player of the Year and SEC Tournament MVP in 1984. He is simply the greatest player in Auburn basketball history.
"I made the best decision of my life coming in 1981 to come here. This is the greatest place ever."
