This is Blake Griffin before the official start of Lob City. He wasn’t running pick-and-rolls with Chris Paul when SLAM 147 came out. Instead, Baron Davis and Randy Foye were the teammates throwing him oops. And oops-a-daisy, Blake done dunked on everyone.

The hype had grown uncontainable after Griffin, the former number one overall pick in 2009, had missed the entirety of his rookie season due to injury. He was an athletic force at Oklahoma who had already offered peeks at what the NBA might see on a nightly basis. So the fact that his first basket in the NBA was a dunk gave even more life to his growing mystique.

He would continue to posterize damn near every big man in the NBA on his way to being named an All-Star as a rookie.

The dunks buried the lede, though. Griffin wasn’t just a freak athlete. He was a real ballplayer. His final averages after playing and starting in every single Clippers game that season were 22 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists on 50 percent shooting. His name being placed on that season’s ROY award angered some who complained he wasn’t really a rookie. But those were All-Star averages accomplished by an All-Star entertainer. The cover line of SLAM 147 was facts. Everyone at the Clippers and the NBA knew he was the future of the League. All we did was write down what they were saying behind closed doors.
