SLAM Hardwood Classics Crewneck - Isiah Thomas (Before '94)
The Bad Boys blindly followed the Baddest of them all. Isiah Thomas was the leader of all leaders. His physical stature was relatively diminutive in the presence of giants like Bill Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn and Dennis Rodman. The strength of his muscles paled in comparison to that of his teammates, the men who made their careers out of consistently handing out punishment at the rim.
Zeke was just their point guard, right? Charged with sharing the sugar and scoring in the clutch. He smiled huge. He dribbled astonishingly. He dished miraculously. He spoke softly in the media. He exchanged kisses with Magic Johnson before games. An inspirational floor general, right?
But make no mistake.
Isiah Thomas was a savage on the court.
Zeke was the one whose foot was always on the gas, egging on those teammates to deal vicious blows to opponents, seeking advantages at every turn, exploiting weaknesses of any kind, bloodthirsty fangs dripping with red veiled by his famous pearly whites. His real charge wasn’t assists or late-game buckets. His real charge was mental warfare. He was actually a general charged with deploying soldiers to burn fields and leave no prisoners.
Detroit had their own set of rules and they refused to play by anyone else’s, even the NBA’s. Spurred on by the meanest and baddest of the Bad Boys, the Pistons captured back-to-back titles at the height of their dominance.
SLAM’s 75 Before ‘94 project came out during the 75th anniversary celebration of the NBA. Our magazine was founded in 1994, which means we missed decades of brilliance. This project was our homage to all the stars who never got a chance to shine on a SLAM cover.
Isiah Thomas’ 75 Before ‘94 cover is now available on a brand new SLAM Hardwood Classics cover tee.
