SLAM’s Legacy Collection dives inside the archives to bring back some college basketball classics. Like the originals, we crafted each Legacy pair of retro shorts with the materials and details to honor the original designs. It was a labor of love in our pursuit to provide an era specific keepsake that celebrates the most iconic styles in college basketball history.
'89 Tiger Legacy
Norm Stewart's Missouri team entered the 1988-89 ranked inside the Top 15 in the Preseason AP Poll. During the season they would climb as high as #3 in the country thanks in large part to a stacked roster which included 4 future NBA players.
With Bruce Irvin, Doug Smith, Gary Leonard and Anthony Peeler leading the way, the Tigers finished the regular season 23-7. Three more wins came during the Big 8 Tournament the last of which, a 98-86 win over #2 Oklahoma, gave Missouri the Big 8 Conference Tournament Championship.
That conference tournament championship propelled the Tigers into the NCAA Tournament as the #3 seed in the Midwest Region. Easy wins over Creighton and Texas put Missouri in the Sweet 16 agains #2 seed Syracuse. In a rematch of an earlier season game, Syracuse prevailed by the slimmest of margins again, 83-80.
