Steve Fisher's Michigan Wolverines entered the 1991-1992 season ranked 20th in the preseason AP Poll.  That was in large part due to what the basketball world was calling "the greatest recruiting class of all time" coming to Ann Arbor.  Jalen Rose, Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson and Jimmy King eventually took over all 5 starting spots for the Wolverines and finished the regular season 20-8.   That was good enough for a #6 seed in the Southeast Region of the NCAA Tournament.

Early round wins against Temple and East Tennessee State put the young Michigan squad in the Sweet 16 against #2 seed Oklahoma State.  A narrow 3 point win put the Wolverines within one game of the Final Four.  Standing in their way was their most hated rival and #1 seed, Ohio State.  In an epic regional final the Fab Five outlasted Jim Jackson's Buckeyes in OT, 75-71.

A win against Nick Van Exel's Cincinnati Bearcats put Michigan in the National Championship game against the defending champs, the Duke Blue Devils.  While Duke pulled away in the 2nd half to win, no one could discredit what the #6 seed Wolverines had accomplished.

"We had a great season.  There will never be a freshman class that will do that again." -Chris Webber
