SLAM’s Legacy Collection dives inside the archives to bring back some college basketball classics. Like the originals, we crafted each Legacy pair of retro shorts with the materials and details to honor the original designs. It was a labor of love in our pursuit to provide an era specific keepsake that celebrates the most iconic styles in college basketball history.
Denny Crum's Louisville Cardinals entered the 1979-1980 season ranked in the Top 10 of the AP Poll. Led by Darrell Griffith and Derek Smith the Cardinals finished the regular season 28-3, including a perfect 12-0 Metro Conference record.
Louisville was awarded a #2 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament. Wins over Kansas State and Texas A&M setup a showdown with #1 seed LSU. U of L dominated the Tigers en-route to a 20 point win earning a trip to the Final Four.
After defeating Iowa, 80-72, Louisville faced college basketball titan UCLA in the National Championship game. Led by home grown talent Griffith's 23, Louisville prevailed 59-54 to give the school it's first National Championship!
"It means more to me probably than the other guys just because I was from Louisville and seen how we came so close so many times and never able to get over the hump. And to be able to get over the hump, it means a lot." -Darrell Griffith
