Joe B. Hall returned a loaded lineup from his '77 SEC Championship team and entered the 1978 season ranked #2 in the preseason AP Poll. After starting the season with 14 straight wins the Wildcats would finish 25-2 and repeat as SEC Champions.
Kentucky's balanced attack was led by senior Jack Givens' 18 points per game with four others averaging in double figures. How dominant was this UK team? Well, the Wildcats were ranked #1 in the country for 13 of the 15 possible weeks during the season. They also had to beat three ranked teams just to get into the Final Four. First it was #13 ranked Florida State, then it was #19 Miami OH, and in the regional final they squeaked past #4 Michigan State.
Things didn't get easier at the Final Four in St. Louis. Future SEC foe, Arkansas, and their star Sidney Moncrief were waiting for the Cats. A hard fought 64-59 win setup a National Title game against #7 Duke.
On that Monday night Jack "Goose" Givens put on a show college basketball would never forget! His 41 point, 8 rebound performance led Kentucky over the Blue Devils 94-88 giving the school it's 5th National Championship. "We won it for the people of Kentucky." -Jack Givens
