Larry Brown's Kansas Jayhawks entered the '87-88 season with high expectations and a #7 pre season ranking. They also had the nations best player in senior forward Danny Manning. Manning was brilliant all year averaging 25 points and 9 rebounds per game and winning all the National Player of Year awards. However, a rough 0-2 start set the tone for an up and down season that saw KU fall completely out of the rankings.
After finishing the regular season 18-11 Kansas was given the #6 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament. Wins over Xavier, Murray State, Vanderbilt and instate rival Kansas State but Brown's Jayhawks back in the Final Four.
A 66-59 win over #2 seed Duke setup a National Championship game against conference foe, #1 Oklahoma. Led by Manning's incredible 31 points and 18 rebounds Kansas prevailed 83-79. The "Danny and the Miracles" legend was born although Manning didn't want anything to do with the nickname.
"That nickname kind of rubbed me a different type of way because basketball is a team game and everyone has to sacrifice for a whole. It was Chris Piper, it was Archie Marshall it was Milt Newton. We came together and our journey was on the same path." -Danny Manning
