It remains the most important game in the history of college basketball. The undefeated Sycamores were led by the "Hick from French Lick" Larry Bird. The Michigan State Spartans and Magic Johnson were able to overcome Bird's 19 point, 13 rebound effort to win the National Championship 75-64.
The game, played in Salt Lake City, remains the highest rated game in the history of televised college basketball and spawned a rivalry that would captivate the sports world for the next decade in the NBA. It is also credited with ushering in the “modern era” of college basketball.
“We were a mid-major school playing in the Missouri Valley for the first time, and we didn’t dream we’d go undefeated. We never thought about it, and we just played, but when we got to around 17-0, that’s when we started thinking, ‘Hey, could we go undefeated?’ But you still didn’t think so until the season ended and you look back and go, ‘Wow, 33 in a row? That’s a lot of games.’ ” -Larry Bird
