Billy Donovan's Florida Gators entered the 1999-2000 season ranked inside the Top 10. Led by Mike Miller, Udonis Haslem and Donnell Harvey UF finished the season 24-7. Coming into the NCAA Tournament as the #5 seed they were faced with the toughest of #12 seeds in Butler. An instant classic ensued with Florida winning in OT on a Mike Miller buzzer beater.
After that nail biter the Gators rolled to the Final Four with wins over #4 Illinois, #1 Duke and #3 Oklahoma State. Teddy Dupay attributes that run to the close 1st round game against Butler. "It was amazing, oh my God. It ignited everything."
A Final Four win versus #8 North Carolina put UF in their first ever National Championship game where they lost to #1 Michigan State, 89-76. Even in defeat the 2000 team is credited with creating the winning foundation that would lead Donovan and the Gators to back to back National Championships in 2006 and 2007.
