Clemson Tigers 1979-1980 Retro Shorts
Up until the 1979-1980 season, Clemson basketball had never reached the NCAA Tournament. Billy Williams and Larry Nance aimed to change that. The Tigers went 19-8 during the regular season knocking off 4 top 25 teams including then #1 ranked Duke.
That was good enough for Clemson to make their first NCAA Tournament appearance as the #6 seed in the West Region. After a close hard-fought win over #11 seed Utah in the first round, the Tigers took on Danny Ainge and #3 seed BYU. A 71-66 win but Clemson in the Sweet 16 where they beat another Cinderella team, Lamar.
"All of a sudden here we are playing for the right to go to the Final Four. I remember how everyone was just kind of going along taking things one at a time, and people really didn't think about what a terrific accomplishment this was for a program in its first year of making the tournament." -Tim Bourret, Former Clemson SID
The Tigers' magical run would end in a loss to UCLA finishing their season 23-9.
