After finishing the 1986-1987 regular season 18-9 and finishing 4th in the WAC, the Wyoming Cowboys needed to make a run in the conference tournament.  They started by beating Utah by 2, then UTEP by 3 and finished it off by beating New Mexico by 2 in the championship game.  Three wins by a combined 7 points put Jim Brandenburg's team in the NCAA Tournament.

The Cowboys came into the tournament as the #12 seed in the West Region.  Their first opponent was #5 seed Virginia.  Led by Eric Leckner's 22 Wyoming escaped with another close victory, 64-60.  Next up was #4 UCLA and their All American Reggie Miller.

Forty-one points.  Wyoming star Fennis Dembo put on a show.  He went 9-14 from the field including 7-10 from 3, added 9 rebounds, and 6 assists to lead the Cowboys to another upset, 78-68.  It remains one of the greatest individual NCAA Tournament performances of all time.

Even though Wyoming would lose their Sweet 16 game against #1 UNLV, Dembo's star still lives on.
