SLAM Presents The Social Justice Issue
Led by Guest Editor-in-Chief Carmelo Anthony, this magazine is dedicated to the issue of social justice and activism as seen through the lens of basketball. Included in the issue are first-person essays from legends Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson and Spencer Haywood; first-person essays on their experiences protesting for change while in the league from Craig Hodges and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf; and essays on their personal experience with police brutality from Thabo Sefolosha and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt. There’s a WNBA roundtable with Sheryl Swoopes, Angel McCoughtry and Lexie Brown, an interview with Stephen Jackson on his role as an activist, a look at the social justice movement as it evolved across the globe and the tale of The Jersey Four, who survived a tragic instance of police brutality and tell their story. Concluding the issue is a letter from Carmelo to the next generation during this crucial moment in time.
