Michigan State Spartans 1989-1990 Retro Shorts
The 1989-90 Michigan State Spartans entered the season unranked and unthought of in regards to the Big Ten Championship race. Led by all-everything shooting guard Steve Smith, the Spartans teetered inside the top 25 for most of the winter.
It wasn't until Jud Heathcote's team won their last 10 regular season games including wins against #15 Illinois, #25 Indiana, #8 Michigan, #17 Minnesota and #10 Purdue, that people started seeing MSU as a Final Four contender. That 10 game win streak secured the Big Ten Championship, put the Spartans inside the top 3 of the AP Poll and earned them the #1 seed in the Southeast Region of the NCAA Tournament.
After two close calls against #16 seed Murray State and #9 seed UC-Santa Barbara, the Spartans were in the Sweet 16. Waiting for them was #4 seed Georgia Tech. Tech's "Lethal Weapon 3" proved to be too much as the Yellow Jackets squeaked out a 1 point overtime win, 81-80.
