Forget Dereck Whittenburg’s heave being caught in mid-air and dunked by Lorenzo Charles to beat Houston’s Phi Slama Jama to give NC State their second NCAA National Championship. It took a miracle run in the ACC Tournament just to get the Wolfpack into the NCAA Tournament.

A 1-point win over Wake Forest, an overtime win against rival North Carolina and a -point win over Ralph Sampson’s Virginia team all had to happen in order for Jim Valvano’s team to participate in March Madness.

That was all before No. 11 seed Pepperdine nearly beat NC State in their first game of the tournament. It took a last second tip-in by Cozell McQueen to force OT and some timely missed FTs by Pepperdine for the Wolfpack to advance.

State then knocked off No. 3 seed UNLV and had to beat Sampson’s No. 1 seeded Virginia Cavaliers again to book their trip to Albuquerque and the Final Four. A win over Georgia in the national semifinals set up a David vs. Goliath matchup against Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and the Houston Cougars.
